Summer Courses
Every year cadets have the opportunity to apply for Summer Training courses covering a variety of subjects. The application process is simple and described below for the different types of courses. When cadets are selected for a course they will be informed. Cadets that are not selected are put on a wait list to be drawn from if there are cancelations. Below you will find a description of all courses available to cadets. The courses have a minimum level to have been completed by applicants and some have a minimum age as well. All courses require the cadet not reach the age of 19 before the completion date.
Level One OPTION
This course is an introduction to summer training. It gives the participants a little taste of the cadet summer training centre (CSTC) life, survival, leadership, citizenship, drill, aviation, music, marksmanship, fitness and aerospace training.

Level Two OPTIONS
Basic Drill and Ceremonial Course (BDCC)
The aim of the training is to prepare cadets to perform the role of a peer leader while building upon the leadership and drill and ceremonial knowledge and skills learned through the sqn program.
Duration: 3 weeks;
Location: Albert Head, BC or Vernon BC;
Sqn proficiency level: Level 2 successfully completed by the end of the current training year.
Basic Survival Course (BSC)
The aim of the training is to further develop in cadets basic survival skills and inspire them to pursue specialist training in this subject area. This will allow them to participate as a skilled junior cadet in survival training as part of the sqn program.
Duration: 3 weeks;

Basic Aviation Technology and Aerospace Course (BATAC)
The aim of the training is to further develop in cadets the fundamentals of aerospace, airport operations and aircraft manufacturing and maintenance and inspire them to pursue specialist training in some or all of the subject areas.

Basic Fitness and Sports Course (BFSC)

The aim of the training is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an instructor and team leader for drill and ceremonial activities

Survival Instructor Course (SIC)
The aim of the training is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an instructor and team leader for aircrew survival activities within the Air cadet program.

Fitness and Sports Instructor Course (FSIC)
The aim of the training is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to perform the role of a fitness and sports instructor and a team leader for fitness and sports activities conducted at the squadron, during regionally directed activities and/or as a staff cadet at a CSTC.

Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor Course (ARMIC)
The aim of the training is to develop individual air rifle marksmanship and summer biathlon specialty skills while reinforcing and further developing the leadership and instructional techniques skills, preparing the cadets to support these two specialty activities at the sqn, during regionally directed activities and/or as a staff cadet at a CSTC.

Advanced Aviation Course (AAC)
The aim of the training is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an instructor and team leader for aviation activities within the Air cadet program.

Military Band - Intermediate Musician Course (MB - IMC)
The aim of the training is to develop the music proficiency of cadets and prepare them to support their sqn bands and related music activities.

Sqn proficiency level: Level 3 successfully completed by the end of the current training year.

Military Band – Advanced Musician Course (MBAMC)

Sqn proficiency level: Level 3 successfully completed by the end of the current training year.

The aim of the training is to develop the music proficiency of cadets and prepare them to support their sqn bands and related music activities.

Sqn proficiency level: Level 3 successfully completed by the end of the current training year.
Advanced Training - Staff Cadet
Cadets interested in applying for Staff Cadet positions must be 16 by 1 January and cannot turn 19 before the last day of summer training. Preference is given to cadets who have completed Level 4 but Level 3 cadets will be considered. Detailed information on the application process will be provided to interested cadets.

Preparation
Applicants for National Course are expected to participate in preparation sessions prior to applications being submitted and continuing until Selection Board Interviews. See the office staff for more details.
Selection Board Interviews
Interviews conducted by the Air Cadet League Provincial Committee will be to select the applicants for training. These interviews are to normally take place during the month of February.
Commitment
Considering the limited number of vacancies and the cost of training, it is very important that the cadets nominated are serious and ready to return to their sqn so that other cadets can benefit from their newly acquired experience, skills and knowledge.
Responsibilities
Cadets are responsible for enquiring about requirements, and for submitting all the required documents prior to the deadline established by the Sqn CO.
Parents/Guardians are responsible for confirming that all information provided by their son/daughter/ward is correct.
Sqn Staff are responsible for ensuring the participation application is filled out completely, for confirming that all required information/documents are provided and correct. Sqn Staff are also responsible or ensuring that cadets meet all prerequisites for the courses they applied for.
Sqn Staff are responsible for providing guidance and information to their cadets.

NATIONAL SUMMER COURSE OPTIONS
International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE)
The IACE is intended only for outstanding senior cadets who will represent Canada with distinction. Selection requirements include: outstanding Air cadet record, good school record, excellent personal characteristics, including appearance, dependability, cooperation and the ability to communicate effectively.
Duration: 2 to 3 weeks, depending on country visited;
Maximum number of candidates: One per sqn;
Minimum age: 17 years old by August 1st of the year the exchange is held. This prerequisite is mandatory.
Sqn proficiency level: Level 4 successfully completed by the application date.
Power Pilot Scholarship (PPS) Glider Pilot Scholarship (GPS)
Candidates must meet all established requirements laid down, including age, medical standards and Canadian Forces (CF) qualifying exam. Another important factor is motivation. Candidates must demonstrate a sincere interest in learning to fly and that they are prepared to commit to the demanding study time required to become a pilot. Recommendations should also consider the interest of the candidate in contributing as future pilots or instructors to the cadet flying programs.
Duration: PPS: 7 weeks, and GPS: 7 weeks;
Maximum number of candidates: The maximum number of candidates per sqn who may be selected for each scholarship is based on the Registered Cadets Monthly Average from the previous year:
80 or less: 2 candidates,
81 to 120: 3 candidates,
121 to 160: 4 candidates, and
161 or more: 5 candidates;
Minimum age: This prerequisite is mandatory
PPS: 17 years old by September 1st of the year the course is taken, and
GPS: 16 years old by September 1st of the year the course is taken;
Sqn proficiency level: PPS: level 4 successfully completed by the end of the current training year, and GPS: level 3 successfully completed by the end of the current training year;
CF Qualifying Exam: This prerequisite is mandatory. The purpose of this exam is to ensure that all candidates possess a basic knowledge in the required aviation subjects.
Education: PPS: completed Grade 10 by nomination deadline, and GPS: completed Grade 9 by nomination deadline;
Minimum medical standards: This prerequisite is mandatory.
Physical limitations: These prerequisites are mandatory. Air cadet gliders and training aircraft used for PPS impose certain physical limitations in regard to weight and size of the pilot. A person’s size must be such that one can sit, comfortably positioned, with good visibility in all directions as well as being able to reach the controls for full movement. The physical limitations are:
Glider: Minimum: height 152.4 cm (no shoes/boots, socks only), weight 40.82 kg, and
Maximum: height 190.5 cm, weight 90.72 kg;
Power: Maximum Weight: 111.13 kg
Required Funds: When reporting for training, cadets must have the funds to cover the following costs:
Canada pilot licence or permit are not eligible for the GPS.
NOTE: Applicants may apply for only one of
IACE, PPS or GPS.
Advanced Aviation Technology Course – Airport Operations (AATC-AO)

Sqn proficiency level: Level 3 successfully completed by the end of the current training year.

The following documents are required for all National Summer Training Courses and are to be submitted to the respective ACL PC by the candidate’s CO:
- Participation Application: for each candidate printed from Fortress.
- School Report: A photocopy of the school reports as specified by the ACL PC;
- Narrative: Candidates must explain, in a one page typed personal narrative, why they would like to participate in the course applied for. The narrative is to be signed and dated by the candidate. If the candidate applies for more than one National Summer Training Course, a narrative must be submitted for each course;
- Cadet Service record: A cadet service record printed out from Fortress; and
- Course or staff cadet report: A photocopy (or copies printed from Fortress) of the most recent course report or staff cadet evaluation report.
GPS/PPS Candidates: The following documents are also required:
- Photocopies (or copies printed from Fortress) of all previous aviation related course reports (GPS, AAC, BAC, ITAC, etc);
- Photocopy of the Medical Certificate, if in the candidate’s possession; and
- For GPS: a completed CATO 54-26, Annex B, GPS – Height and Weight Form.
- For PPS: a completed CATO 54-27, Annex B, PPS – Height and Weight Form.
IACE Candidates: The following documents are also required:
- Three (3) completed IACE Association Information Forms, each with a passport photo glued in the appropriate location;
- A one page report written by the candidate’s Sqn CO; and
- A photocopy of page 3 of the candidate’s passport. If the passport has not been received, a photocopy of the candidate’s Birth Certificate shall be included.

Applicants for the following courses are asked to fill out the form found here and hand it in to their level officer. They will then be given a participation application by the staff.
The following documents are required for all National Summer Training Courses and are to be submitted to the respective ACL PC by the candidate’s CO:
Ø Participation Application: for each candidate printed from Fortress staff will provide for all applicants.
Ø School Report: A photocopy of the school reports as specified by the ACP PC;
Ø Narrative: Candidates must explain, in a one page typed personal narrative, why they would like to participate in the course applied for. The narrative is to be signed and dated by the candidate. If the candidate applies for more than one National Summer Training Course, a narrative must be submitted for each course;
Ø Cadet Service record: A cadet service record printed out from Fortress to be provided by Squadron staff; and
Ø Course or staff cadet report: A photocopy (or copies printed from Fortress) of the most recent course report or staff cadet evaluation report to be provided by Squadron staff.
GPS/PPS Candidates: The following documents are also required:
Ø Photocopies (or copies printed from Fortress) of all previous aviation related course reports (GPS, AAC, BAC, ITAC, etc)
to be provided by Squadron staff;
Ø Photocopy of the Medical Certificate, if in the candidate’s possession; and
Ø For GPS: a completed CATO 54-26, Annex B, GPS – Height and Weight Form (will be provided by staff with participation application).
Ø For PPS: a completed CATO 54-27, Annex B, PPS – Height and Weight Form(will be provided by staff with participation application).
IACE Candidates: The following documents are also required:
Ø Three (3) completed IACE Association Information Forms, each with a passport photo glued in the appropriate location(will be provided by staff with participation application);
Ø A one page report written by the candidate’s Sqn CO(to be written and attached by CO when all other forms are complete); and
Ø A photocopy of page 3 of the candidate’s passport. If the passport has not been received, a photocopy of the candidate’s Birth Certificate shall be included.

Level 3
- Advanced Aerospace Course (AASC) (Six Weeks)
- Advanced Aviation Technology Course – Airport Operations (AATC-AO) (Six Weeks)
- Advanced Aviation Technology Course – Aircraft Maintenance (AATC-AM) (Six Weeks)
- Glider Pilot Scholarship (GPS) (Six Weeks)
Level 4
- Power Pilot Scholarship (PPS) (Seven Weeks)
- International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) (Varies)
